Abstract:At the core of strategic management is the question how firms build new capabilities (hereafter as: cap./caps.) to adapt to changing environments. This paper proposes a model describing how firms develop a cap. to create and develop ventures (here as: vent./vents.) through corporate vent. capital, alliances, and acquisitions. The model is based on longitudinal case studies of large corporations operating in the information and communication technology sector in Europe. At this model's core are learning processes enabling the firm to build up an external corporate vent. cap. Critical to deepening the cap. acquired is adaptation of all knowledge to the firm specific context through experiential learning mechanisms.
