Abstract:The proportion of women in higly qualified scientific employment in central and eastern Europe and the Baltic states (CEEC-10) is higher than in western Europe. This paper investigates the impact of the accession of the CEEC-10 to the EU on the employment prospects of highly qualified women. It is argued that social closure mechanisnms may weaken their employment prospects. However, the standardization of equal opportunities proclaimed by the EU provides the best hope of improvement for their employment prospects.
