Abstract:New ventures (hereafter as: NVs) compete by creating innovative products. Building on the knowledge-based view of the firm, the paper proposes that the intensity of NVs' use of inward licensing reflects the demands of their industries and competitive strategies (here as: comp-str/s). The results of an empirical study of 361 U.S. NVs show that industry characteristics and comp-str. influence their inward licensing as a means of lowering costs and maintaining strategic flexibility while building their capabilities.
