Abstract:The authors have conducted a study that tests the influence of different external and internal factors on the Multinational CorporationsÂ’ (MNCs) informal and formal ways to control their human resources. The results of the survey made indicate how informal and formal ways to control human resources depend on the extent to which the MNC has a global strategy as well as on the local conditions of the subsidiaries. The extent of informal control mechanisms was also explained by the level of employee education. Most interestingly, the results indicate how both types of control mechanisms have a different set of internal and external antecedents. The data also suggests that the informal and formal control mechanisms of human resources are not exclusive, but they can complement each others as they are satisfying different kinds of demands.
