Abstract:The operation of Liverpool public houses by Peter Walker & Son during 1846-1914 was remarkable by an adherence to their direct management. The employment of managers was accompanied by features which reinforce the mainly retail orientation of the company. It is argued that an institutionalist approach that gives due weight to both economic and cultural factors is needed in exploring the development of management practice.
