Abstract:A holistic perspective in considering the impact of environment of the country and the strategy of a multinational corporate (MNC) on the human resource (HR) practices is adopted in the article. The authors argue that human resource management (HRM) is essential in MNCs in order to balance the local and global forces; HRM helps the MNC to adapt to the local circumstances as well as to implement practices that are vital to the global strategy. HR is seen as the key factor in developing social capital that can act as a substitute for formal control. This new role of developing human capital confers on HR the task of filtering mission-specific critical practices through a ‘localization mesh’ that can ensure the success. In addition, the ways in which an MNC is able to create social capital in the Latin America context are suggested in the article.
