Abstract:This article deals with inconsistent findings on hte performance consequences of new CEO origin. It is argued that there is a more refined theoretical conceptualization and a finer-grained measurement of the underlying construct of the insider vs. outsider CEO, and a more comprehensive and nuanced framework of the succession contexst is built and tested. The author uses longtitudal investigation on U.S. airline and chemical industries from 1972 to 2002. Significant findings are found in moderating effects when environmental munificense, pre-succession firm performance and concomitant strategic and senior executive team changes are concidered.
