Abstract:The article investigates lawyers' responds to financial incentives and, in particular, whether those responds are consistent with contract theory. The data used in the study is collected from before and after the introduction of standard fees for legal aid lawyers in England and Wales. For some inputs, these substituted fixed price contracts for fee-for-service remuneration. The influence of the new contracts on case-level inputs is analyzed and the substitution effect across inputs is calculated. Lawyers' responses are found to be consistent with contract theory providing evidence on the effects of remuneration contracts. These findings are also relevant for legal aid expenditure control, and personal injury litigation.
