Abstract:This article deals with the post 9/11 hardening of American political rhetoric and aims to create a framework for conducting an analysis of persuasion in political discourse through a metaphor-based method. The paper observes the public speeches George W. Bush gave to the nation in 2001-2004 and focuses on the political persuasion strategy that promoted the preventive war in Iraq. According to the author it is not possible to reach an ultimate conclusion on how a discourse affects political action nor how manipulative it can be, but as the results of the paper show it is however possible to systematically analyse persuasion in political discourse and uncover the discourse's underlying ideological origins as well as its persuasive strategy.
