Abstract:The German steel industry is faring better in the market than most other comparable steel industries in the world. German firms have adjusted with less support from the government and the process of adjustment has been relatively more consensual. Condetermination has contributed to Germany's relative success because it has allowed for positive economic adaptation while at the same time providing a forum for resolving the political conflicts that accompany economic change. The combination of technically effective and politically smooth adjustment makes the German steel industry an instructive example. The climate of union-management relations and superior performance of German management are examined too.
