Abstract:Conflicts may develop during any resource allocation process. Two frequently used criteria are equity and equality. A study examined how arbitrators use these two criteria by investigating the effect of final offer /FOA/ and conventional arbitration /CA/ on the decision and attitudes of 132 graduate and undergraduate students who acted as arbitrators in wage and salary disputes. The 2nd experiment used 31 practicing arbitrators as subjects. Both groups made decisions that were most consistent with a split-the-difference decision rule.
