Abstract:Government policy towards the academic sector in Britain has a developing policy of selectively providing extra support for a limited number of areas of scientific and engineering research deemed by some criteria to be important and linked to the requirements of industry. This policy implies ability to choose those areas that will be important some time in the future. This mechanism is outlined as it currently exists and some other possible arrangements are outlined. The current approach is described and its strengths and weaknesses examined. There appear to be several kinds of error that are made in anticipating the future and which need to be guarded against in the selection of priority areas for research.
