| Abstract: | The state of the art of the Operations Research /OR/ methods for medium and short term production planning is discussed, based on the review of the literature from 1975 up to 1986. The Material Requirements Planning /MRP/ concept which is wide-spread in practice hardly contains planning methods and is not an ideal framework for planning methods. Recent extensions of this concept need to be supplemented by OR planning methods as well. Such methods are reviewed for the partial problems of medium term planning, lot sizing and scheduling. Finally, the hierarchical production planning approach for combining the partial problems is outlined and illustrated by means of case reports. |
