Abstract: | Responsible economists, policy makers, politicians, and the public-at-large have contributed to the perception of an imminent "crisis situation" regarding the state of the trade deficit of the United States, which, to many, needs to be urgently addressed. For the neoclassical economist, voluntary trade deficits are not problematic at all. The fundamental premise is that perception of the trade deficit and its effect on decisions that lead to national trade policies can only be understood through the incorporation of economic, political and moralistic arguments, where the compound explanation goes beyond that which can be obtained from any of these separate fields of study. |
