Abstract:Many transportation companies face the problem of deciding how to manage their vehicle fleet over time. That decision process is particularly important for companies that have full control over their vehicle movements on a real-time basis, and that are not bound by a service schedule. Each industry is characterized by a large, spatially distributed fleet of vehicles which must be moved to handle current demands or repositioned to handle known or anticipated demands at future points in time. Since demands vary over time as well as space, the problem is referred to as the dynamic vehicle allocation problem.
