Abstract:A classic quality control/machine maintenance model is modified to take into account the quality improvement events that can be influenced by the firm's inspection policies. The model extension captures the idea that when a production process is inspected by the operators and found to be out of control, a cause of the problem may be discovered and rectified so that the process realizes a permanent improvement: the probability that it goes out of control again is decreased. This phenomenon, in turn, has managerial implications for the optimal inspection policies. It helps to point out that suboptimal inspection policies may be chosen if potential learning benefits are ignored.
