Abstract:Self-development is a means used by Japanese organizations to ensure the constant progress of their employee's abilities. The procedure of self-development is planned and carried out by the employee himself, though the personnel or training department strongly advices, selects, or even finances a variety of programmes. The efforts are often rewarded by a promotion within the organization. Large corporations often send their employees to outside schools, seminars, or even colleges, universities and research institutes. The perspective on self-development is illustrated by an example of a plan for monetary assistance and of a long-term training programme for specialists and managerial employees from the Sumitomo Trust.
