Abstract:Changing features of industrial relations in Britain since 1979 are examined. Two related factors are indicated to be responsible: acceleration of economic restructuring and abandonment of government commitment to full employment. Unions have lost members. Real wages, intensification of work, changes in productivity, strike levels and other aspects of workplace organization are examined. Two interpretations of the changing labour practices are outlined: a more corporatist relationship between management and domestic shop-floor organization; a more effective application of the same institutions in the surviving manufacturing sectors.
