Abstract:Relocating a company and its staff is a major task. It is described how several organizations, large and small, have tackled the problem. Some employed in-house resources while others hired outside consultants, but all survived the ordeal. A lot of companies see moving offices as a chance to effect operational or cultural change. E.g. catalogue retailer Argos chose to upgrade its computer mainframe during the move to Milton Keynes. People are the most difficult problem in relocating any company. Not as many staff as hoped is prepared to uproot themselves and their families. Mismanagement of communications with the workforce and their hostile reactions to the relocation are the major problems managers face.
