Abstract:A framework is developed to help identify innovation strategies. This framework employs four categories of competitive innovations: incremental product innovation; technical innovation in terms of product technology; application innovation, and radial innovation /being the basis for whole new industries/. Relative frequencies of incremental and radical innovations can be estimated from the literature. Data from executives interviewed are used to estimate the incidence of the other two categories. Radical innovations are more likely to be introduced from outside the industry. Innovation benefits and failure rates are discussed regarding each category. A strategic approach to the innovation mix is suggested.
