| Abstract: | It is a worldwide phenomenon that intra- industry trade increases at the expense of inter-industry trade. This fact cannot be explained by factor endowments, only by scale economies and product differentiation. The note computes Balassa's (1966) and Kreinin's (1981) measure of intra-industry trade for the trade flows of the US with Western-Europe, Canada, Japan, NICs and LDCs for the 1963- 1980 period. Intra-industry trade grows as one progresses in time or along the development scale. |
