| Abstract: | Discrete manufacturing environments are modeled as networks of queues and the analysis is complemented with tradeoff curves involving capacity, lead times and work-in-process. The analysis relies primarily on parametric decomposition for estimating performance measures in networks of queues. It is shown that under fairly realistic conditions the targeting and balancing problems can be approximated by easily solvable convex programs. A heuristic is presented to solve the problem approximately. Error bounds are also provided on the heuristic solution. It is shown that, under certain mild conditions, the algorithms give asymptotically optimal solutions relative to the approximation problems. |
