Abstract:Just-in-Time /JIT/ inventory management techniques are adopted by companies in the ever increasing competition environment, especially in Japan. The main implication of the adoption of JIT is the different information requirement from the Materials Requirements Planning /MRP/ process which has been widely used for materials control so far. An MRP system requires eight databases. Successful implementation of JIT requires stable production schedules, accurate and timely information about vendors, parts, products, buyers, production flows and transportation. The information requirements for three subsystems are supported by six databases. The new developments in information technology have helped to facilitate JIT. Examples are given.
