Abstract:With the labour movement in a sustained period of debate over its future direction, considered is how union presidential elections might serve as part of the strategic formulation process. Offered is a three-criteria framework that suggests how the strategic impact of an election might be enhanced if: the election occurs during a time when external pressures have created a felt for change; the candidates represent clearly delineated and understood alternative responses to those external pressures; the outcome of the election impacts on the strategic direction of the organization.
