Abstract:References play a very important role in the quality of the selection decision. They are part of the employment process. But reference giving has its pitfalls. This article gives some ideas on how to avoid these pitfalls. References should always be obtained by direct interview and there are two important questions that the referee should always be asked: "Would you re-employ this person?" and "Do you know of any reason why we should not employ him or her?"
