Abstract:The architectures of the sixties and seventies are running out. Companies must remove the barriers to change and shape their information technologies and their plans around business strategies. Still using 1970s technology, the traditional people are stuck in the shoulder of the S curves presented while the pioneers are blazing ahead to the second curve by stressing connectivity concepts. The two S curves show the dependence of performance on effort. The 1st S curve plots centralized data and processing, proprietary applications, terminal and mainframe interfaces, minimum connects. The second curve presents distributed processing on desktop, distributed databases and portability, EDI, high degree of connectivity.
