Abstract:Energy coefficient is an often used indicator in international comparisons of the correlation of energy consumption with economic growth. The basic statistical properties of the energy coefficient are examined, particularly its relationship with the energy-output ratio, and the effects of measuring it on a per capita basis. Several methods of deriving the trend, which provides an insight into the underlying energy-output relationship, are presented. The time-series data from 1960 to 1986 for nine East and Southeast Asian countries are used to illustrate the properties of the coefficient and to study the methods.
