Abstract:The market for breakfast cereals in the UK is examined, including both hot and ready-to-eat cereals. Retail sales was worth GBP 815 million in 1990, a growth of 9 percent from GBP 748 million in 1989 at current prices but a slight decline in real terms. The main growth has been in mueslis and bran-based cereals reflecting consumer recognition of its advantage as a source of soluble fibre. The hot oat cereal sector has shown growth, particularly in the instant varieties. The use of flavouring as dried fruits has continued to be a significant feature of new brands. Distribution is dominated by the five major grocery multiplets. Real value growth is expected to resume in 1992, and will be driven by value-added products.
