| Abstract: | Schools and colleges have undergone a fundamental transformation since management responsibility was developed from local authorities. The author assesses the problems faced by headteachers coping with local management of schools and the national curriculum. Try to picture a multi-million pound business where the chief executive helps out on the shopfloor whenever an employee is on sick leave. Imagine, too, that same chief executive attempting to give the business a strategic direction while also acting as director of personnel, finance and marketing. |
