Abstract:This paper addresses the question of the existence of corporate philanthropy (hereafter as: c-ph.) proposing a framework for analyzing c-ph. along the dimensions of business/society interest and primary/secondary stakeholder focus. The framework is applied to understand business involvement (here as: bus-inv. - for 'involvement' as: inv.) with the arts in the U.K. A unique dataset of 60 texts describing different firms' inv. with the arts is analyzed through formal content analysis to uncover the motivations for bus-inv. Cluster analysis is used to identify motivational groupings. Identified are two broad types of inv., that is, advertisers and legitimators. This paper's contribution: 1. It provides a clear framework to understand the motivations for corporate giving applying empirical data. 2. There is little evidence, if at all, found of c-ph. in the context of firms giving to the arts in the U.K.
