Abstract:This article states that labor market conditions are frequently overlooked, but a vital determinant of retirement transitions. Using pooled cross-sectional data from the March Current Population Survey (CPS), authors' focus is to analyze how the unemployment rate influences on retirement and find out whether the Social Security (SS) system and Unemployment Insurance (UI) system affect how older workers respond to labor market shocks. The findings show that downturns in the labor market are associated with increase in retirement transitions, but this happens only once workers become SS-eligible. The impact of UI generosity on retirement is found to be weaker which suggest that for older workers the SS may be a more effective form of unemployment insurance than UI.
