Abstract:This article examines membership rates in labor unions that have been declining in Denmark, Finland and Sweden. In the three Ghent countries, changes in the unemployment insurance system can have affected trade union membership declining. The most part of the decline has occurred in a period of low unemployment, which may have reduced the employee willingness to take unemployment insurance. It seems that trade union independent unemployment funds can be alternatives for employees who take unemployment insurance.
