Abstract:Several British organisations have cut management jobs recently. The reason for this is not simply the worsening economic situation but the fact that they want to improve communication, reduce red tape and increase their responsiveness to customers needs. To do this, organisations have to de-layer to reduce organisational complexity. However, de-layering will have a high social cost especially for senior staff.
