Abstract:In this study the author discusses the growing temporary agency work and how it differs strongly between different industrial relations systems. The topic is studied by drawing on theoretical and empirical insights, from which propositions are developed on why companies use temporary agency work. Case-study evidence collected in the USA and Germany are contrasted with the aforementioned propositions to analyse the deployment of agency work in these two different industrial and how relations systems and the role of agency work differs from each other. The findings indicate that the main differences in the deployment of temporary agency workers exist with regard to legal regulation and employers´ strategies of labour use while similarities exist regarding the supply of agency labour.
