Abstract:This paper participates in the 'Does STS mean business' (STS for 'science and technology studies') debate by telling the weird empirical story of the introduction of shopping carts in American grocery stores from 1936 to 1959, based on a systematic reading of the trade journal "Progressive Grocer". It is shown that 'business studies' may benefit from an STS-derived symmetrical look at market actors with their objects based on an 'archaeology of present times'. It is also argued that STS should study contemporary flexible forms of organizing.
