Abstract:This article investigates a question of why organizations choose to engage in socially responsible purchasing initiatives. A case-study approach is used to examine the background of influences that against organizations have chosen to develop supplier diversity initiatives in both the U.S. and U.K. The analysis identifies four influences: legislative and policy developments, economic imperatives, stakeholder pressures and ethical influences. The analysis reveals contextual differences between the two countries' experience in socially responsible purchasing and offers an empirical and theoretical explanation of corporate behavior.
