Abstract:Not until comparatively late, namely on 1 January 1986 did Spain, together with Portugal, become a full member of the European Community. The pressure to modernise the economy which in other Mediterranean countries with similar problems in some cases was spread over an extended period, was particularly intense in the Spanish case. Accession to the Community a decade ago has both provided strong impulses to the economy and mercilessly revealed its weaknesses. The labour market crises was exacerbated during the European-wide cyclical downturn at the start of this decade.
