Abstract:Across the European Union (EU), governments are preparing for the advent of Economic and Monetary Union (EMU), set for 1999. The effects of this project on employment throughout the EU is a primary concern for many social partners. In this feature, the authors review the attitudes of trade unions and employers at EU level and in selected EU member states. The current debate on EMU is characterised by division between both politicians and economists. It is because of the uncertainty involved in the EMU project that policy statements from the social partners remain, for the most part, vague.
