Abstract:There has been a lively academic discussion on the question of how important the dominant position of Germany has been in the setting of the monetary policy in the European Monetary System (EMS). The so-called "German leadership" hypothesis has been supported by empirical results purpoting to show that the EMS has been characterized by greater short-run exchange rate stability among other factors. In this note the authors employ cointergration and Granger causality techniques to investigate several aspects of the German leadership hypothesis.
