Abstract:There's no hiding from European monetary union - even if a company doesn't trade in a European zone, its suppliers, competitors and customers probably will. When the newly-elected Labour government announced its decision to hand control of interest rates over to the Bank of England, some read it as a signal that the UK might very well join EMU as part of the first wave; others saw the independence it bestowed on the Bank as a possible alternative to the single currency. As yet, nothing is ceratain; but while the British government is in a position to hedge its best until beyond the turn of the country, British businesses are not.
