Abstract: | May brings the crunch for the European single currency. On the second day of the month, the European Council will designate the participants in the first round of economic and monetary union (EMU). At the same time, bilateral conversion rates will be set for the currencies of future EMU members, determining their value in relation to the new money, the euro. During the first half of this year - under the presidency of the UK - the new European Central Bank (ECB), based in Frankfurt, together with the associated European System of Central Banks (ESCB) is due to come formally into existence. Together, they will be responsible for maintaining low and stable inflation rates. |
