Abstract: | The monetary policy of the European Central Bank (ECB) will follow closely the course which the Bundesbank, with its anchor role in the European Monetary System, has pursued in the recent years. The medium-range target for inflation will most likely be set at 2 percent or a little below. Unemployment rates in the European Monetary Union (EMU) countries will probably come down if real GDP-growth exceeds 2.5 % in the next years. Wage policy, therefore, has to aim at using the scope for a medium-term expansion of nominal output more efficiently. In particular, it must keep actual inflation below the medium-run target rate of the ECB. |
