| Abstract: | The 1997 results released by various European national governments indicate that 11 countries are set to join the first round of EMU. Two vital steps were taken last month towards achieving European economic and monetary union (EMU) at the beginning of next year. Greece, lagging behind in meeting the convergence criteria for the single currency, was admitted into the Exchange Rate Mechanism. Ireland, which has no problems observing the convergence rules, agreed on equally unexpected 3% revaluation of the punt. |
