Abstract:Neither of the three EU-member countries, which have increased their economic output recently, have considered an example to be followed either the model of classic market economy or the earlier successful welfare model. Their common trait being that they are rather small, very open with a relatively highly advanced financial system and a small level of intervention by the state. The study maps out the tendencies in world economy based on indices of global competitiveness. The situation of Hungary is investigated as well as the relationships between the Central-Eastern European region and the countries of the European Union.
