Abstract:Intra-industry trade is a relevant concept for a large area of exchange of goods with high substitutability and conformity in use. It can be identified even on fine levels of disaggregation. The concept cannot be directly incorporated in the standard Heckscher- Ohlin-Lerner-Samuelson model of international trade because this would complicate the model beyond the capabilities of present-day mathematics. The only solution seems to be to supplement the HOLS model with sub-theories explaining intra-industry trade of so-called "Linder goods".
