Abstract:When major developing countries embarked upon industrialisation in the fifties, they have chosen an inward-looking, import-substituting strategy of industrialisation. This is contrary to international trends which show an increasing intra-industry trade in capital goods. The rationale behind this intra-industry trade is the benefit to be reaped by narrow specialisation and static and dynamic economies of scale. Developing countries too have to subsidize promising segments and accept reliance on foreign product technologies
