Abstract:It was found recently that intra-industry trade comes about between countries of different development levels too, such as the countries of the Pacific Basin, which are partly developed (US, Japan,` etc.) , partly NIC (Korea, Taiwan), partly developing (Indonesia, Malaysia). The present paper tests on the example of Pacific Basin countries some hypotheses concerning intra-industry trade. The hypotheses are: the higher the ratio of intra-industry trade, the smaller the difference in per capita income, in factor endowment ratios between trading countries, the smaller trade barriers, transportation costs, the stronger the presence of multinationals, the more differentiated production, the greater economies of scale. Data corroborate on the whole the hypotheses.
