Abstract:After recounting the principal critiques against the floating exchange rate system three proposals for international monetary co-ordination are presented: the McKinnon proposal for co-ordination of the growth of world money supply, Wllliamsons target zones for exchange rates and the indicator approach. Fundamental problems of all the three methods are how to find the "equilibrium exchange rate" and lacking financial discipline. On the whole the author is sceptical as to the success of international monetary co-ordination.
