Abstract:Several studies have been carried out to investigate the causes of wage inequality between skilled and unskilled workers in the last two decades. The large majority of these studies argue that either skill-biased technical change or trade/globalisation is the main cause of the rise in the skill premium. However, the results of the econometric studies have been obtained by only employing data on manufacturing. The paper presents some stylized facts for the United Kingdom; then it describes the models and the benchmark dataset for the United Kingdom, respectively; in the last section the paper explores the effects of the policy simulations; and the final section presents some conclusions.
