Abstract:A management accounting information system can be aligned and integrated to serve an organization's needs, much the same way principles of vertical integration are used to serve internal efficiencies. The author states that a vertically integrated information system (VIIS) must adhere to certain principles. This article sets a number of principles to frame and guide a VIIS design for a management accounting system: 1) All costs are traced and connected to the organizational units; 2) Organizational costs are varyingly allocated; 3) Cost objects can be characterized with attributes and grouped in hierarchies; 4) Each cost pool is associated with a corresponding cost driver and with event frequencies that determine actual allocation levels; 5) Cost pools are focus of a management accounting VIIS.
